Since 1950’s, Cannes film festival has seen some of the most glorious and historic jewels shining on the red carpet. From Italian screen sirens Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida to Royalty such as late Princess Diana, celebs have never shied away from flaunting their expensive jewels at Cannes.
To take this tradition further, Chopard, the Swiss luxury watchmaker, and fine jewelry giant was appointed the official jeweler of the film festival, 20 years ago. They not only lend precious baubles to some of the biggest movie stars on the red carpet but also design the famed Palme d’Or, the official trophy of the film festival.
But it’s not just Chopard that brings glamor to Cannes. From Bulgari to Cartier, some of the biggest jewelry brands have been a part of Cannes glorious past.
In 2002 supermodel and entrepreneur Iman wore De Beers Millennium Star necklace, studded with the world’s largest flawless pear-shaped diamond. The following year, Elizabeth Taylor adorned her iconic emerald and diamond Bulgari pieces for the amfAR Gala, 2003.
In 2012, Eva Herzigova wore Chopard’s Marilyn Monroe Tribute set, made in white gold and diamonds on the red carpet. American actress Jessica Chastain paid tribute to Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor by wearing a deep blue sapphire and diamond Bulgari neckpiece in 2013. Originally it was a gift from Richard Burton to Taylor. And the Reine Makeda Cartier necklace chosen by Jane Fonda in 2014 has acquired a special place in the fine jewelry history.
With Cannes Film Festival completing it’s seventy years, stars have once again taken to the red carpet, adorning jewelry pieces that can shame the royals.
