Ulyana Sergeenko is a fashion original. Often making it to the best dressed hall of fame at the couture weeks in Paris and fashion weeks through out the world, her making of a designer stems from her being a niche consumer of couture herself.

Ulyana’s sartorial fashion choices find a strong manifestation in her couture label ‘Ulyana Sergeenko’ which was launched in 2012. Her agenda is clear – precise tailoring with larger than life design form. She can be credited to narrate the glorious Russian historic tales through her creations and with every new collection she brings forth a different era of the Russian cultural/political landscape.

This time it was the 50’s and 60’s which reflected positivity and hope. Those were the decades when Soviet Russia was going through a period of ‘Iron Curtain’ but that did not deter Russians from keeping an account of the cultural and artistic developments through out the world and be inspired.

One experiences a sense of freedom even in those simple yet solid silhouettes. Handsome tweed trousers with sequinned crop tops and an off shoulder dress with metallic  botanical designs seemed to bring together the playfulness and the formality of Russia. There were some pieces which evoked a sense of urbane sophistication – pleated floral skirt and a top with floral 3d applique work and a heavily sequinned long over coat.

An addition of garter belts brought a tinge of sensuality to the collection. Fur and lace are always a talking point when it’s couture inspired by Russia, those stunning delicate lace dresses and that long pistachio hued fur coat with botanical designs are just stuck in our heads.
