PHULKARI : NOT JUST A CRAFT BUT A WAY OF LIVING

Imagine a land known for it’s rich heritage , people with open hearts , food and off course colors , yes I am talking about Punjab. After spending 5 years in Punjab as a student , I could not resist dedicating a post to what I can call now my second home. Be it the yellow mustard fields , the morning paath of Guru Granth Sahib or the breathtaking view of the Golden temple , grandeur flows in every nook and corner of Punjab. You can’t help but be inspired by the buildings , clothes and rare artifacts which encapsulate the very proud history of Punjab.Being a fashion blogger I had to come up with a post on phulkari , which forms a very important component of ‘Punjabiyat’. Worn by all is an example of a master craft.

Image of a traditional Phulkari , bright colours form a very important component of the whole craft. Normally the flowers made in Phulkari are placed at some distance from each other , the base is pretty much visible but this piece has some thick work done.

Taking a closer look at the pattern , there are only a few types of flowers that are made and then they are connected with each other forming a ‘JAAL’ or a net to create a design
Phulkari as the word suggests is essentially making of a peculiar pattern of flowers on the base.
One can see how intricate the pattern is
