Laksheeta Govil’s commitment to tradition and her desire to create something fresh led to the launch of her label ‘Fizzy Goblet’.  Initially, she started with her personal project which involved hand painting canvas shoes and soon realised that the traditional Indian ‘jutti’ has so much to offer and can be revamped. With an aim to blend Indian aesthetics and the modern day fashionscape’s changing DNA, she recently launched ‘Jooti sneakers 2.0’.

Sounds interesting? For all those who want to know more about this basic-turned-Haute piece of footwear, we got Laksheeta herself to decode these cool footwear pieces. She also shares her plans on how to fit ‘jutti’, the age-old classic in today’s competitive market.

1.What inspired you to venture into footwear design?

Designing and creating had always been a part of my DNA. I had initially started with a personal project of hand – painting canvas shoes. Later, I felt that there is so much that Indian jutti has to offer with its beautiful history. My previous experiences with Puma and other couture houses like Lecoanet and Hemant gave me an insight into the world of shoes. We wanted to create a fun, designer pair of shoes which was an instant pick-me – up and also pocket-friendly.

2. Tell us a little about your design process?

It starts with an idea, translates into a sketch and then I play with fabrics and colours.

3. What intrigues you about juttis that you decided to revamp this age old classic piece of footwear?

The idea was to consciously marry the old world, the allure of juttis with the chaos of pop culture that’s relevant to the current generation. We wanted to make fun, quirky handcrafted pairs of sneakers.

4. How do you plan to fit this staple Indian piece of footwear in today’s market influenced by western sensibilities?

For a while, we continued to create and innovate with new designs, customised options and interesting themes. But we needed to evolve into something more. We wanted to blend the Indian with the contemporary, and we believed it was time for the classic jutti to get a makeover. First,  we started with Brogues which matches amazingly well with western sensibilities and now we just launched handcrafted Jutti sneakers 2.0 which gives a great twist to the concept of sneakers.

5. Who are your favourite footwear designers?

Charlotte Olympia, Sophie Webster are a few of my favourites and of course I love Toms shoes for their social impact and wearability.

6. Footwear shopping can be a bit tricky. Any tips for women and guys out there on how to pick up the right piece?

Consumers should pay attention to details like the shape, colour, read the product description well and also look out for the recommendations on the website.
