Last year, polymath, Karl Lagerfeld completed 50 years at Fendi. It was in 1965 that Karl Lagerfeld who was at the helm of Chanel, adopted the Italian fashion house as his own. Since then Karl Lagerfeld has given Fendi a global identity, a brand which is a strong manifestation of it’s love affair with art and precise tailoring.
Be it their head offices at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana inspired by the painting of Giorgio de Chirico, their fall 2015 collection inspired by the Swiss artist 20th-century Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp or their Meret Probst’s ‘Starting with a Blank Canvas’ window installation. Art seamlessly blends with fashion at Fendi.
The brand turned 90 this year and to mark this milestone, Karl Lagerfeld took inspiration from a Norwegian fairy tale ‘East of the Sun, West of the Moon’ a children’s book with illustrations from the revered Kay Nielsen to create a collection. The venue of the show was the iconic Trevi Fountain. A glass ramp was constructed to give an illusion of models walking on water. Trevi and Fendi have a long lasting association since Fendi took over Trevi fountain’s renovation last year.
The collection was replete with intricately designed creations with a decadent use of fur over embroidery and botanical embellishments. Kendell Jenner opened the show in a blue Astrakhan fur coat with a kaleidoscope-inspired pattern on the skirt. Her second appearance was in a demure light chiffon gown. One of the most striking piece was the cape adorned by Bella Hadid with one of Nielsen’s illustrations. Dresses made in silk, tulle and organza with water nymphs embroidered on them seemed to create some genuine fairy tail moments on the runway. The use of fur was in such a way as to make it look light and subtle. A dress made in powder blue fur with brown baroque design, a strapless dress with 3d floral appliqué, an empire waist gown with fur embroidery from head to toe were a few pieces that stood out.
